Traverse

The vertical “ring” consists of seven sections of cast iron bolted together.  Underneath the horizontal coal ring, a steel substructure provides the stability required.  The juxtaposition of the cast iron and coal explores temporality and permanence. The coal operates as a shadow or mirror to the massive iron ring, shifting the plane position and the spectator’s relationship both physically and psychologically. One of the challenges I encountered with this work was how to avoid the visual intimidation factor often accompanying large-scale artwork that employs weighty materials.  Although I desired mass and weight, I hoped for a simultaneous delicacy within the form.
